Testing a VM

One View provides a mechanism to validate the integrity of a DR VM. It allows you to select a DR VM snapshot and to create a separate test VM from it. Once the test VM is running, you can test it. After testing is complete you can finish testing. When testing is finished, the test VM is shut down and is deleted.

Note: You can only test a DR VM when it is acting as the DR destination VM. If a primary VM fails over to the DR VM, the DR VM assumes a primary role and you cannot test it.

To create a test VM

  1. In the One View Console masthead, click VIRTUAL MACHINES.
  2. On the VIRTUAL MACHINES page, click the VM you wish to test.
  3. In the DR pane of the VM you wish to test, click a recovery point.

Note: If you choose a recovery point while it is still being transferred to the DR site, the Test button will not be displayed. The Test button will appear after the transfer completes.
  4. Click Test. After a short while, a new test VM pane will appear.

To test a VM

Once the test VM is running, you can access it through its console in the everRun Availability Console and perform other operations to verify that it performs as expected. The tests you chose to run could include logging on, enabling the network, uploading and running scripts, etc. and will vary according to your application and the amount and types of testing you want to perform.

To finish testing a VM

  1. In the One View Console masthead, click VIRTUAL MACHINES.
  2. On the VIRTUAL MACHINES page, click the VM that is undergoing test.
  3. In the test VM pane, or in the action bar, click Finish to shut down and delete the test VM.
Note: You must finish testing the test VM before you perform a DR operation (migrate, failover, revert) on its associated active VM.
